Wetass Sport #236–FlugTag Fiesta: Ahh, you just can’t make this sh*t up, and thanks to TWC reader Tricia, who tipped me to this, we don’t have to. “Flugtag” means “flying day” in German, but what it really means is “people with too much time and booze on their hands, building crazy flying contraptions to propel themselves with maximum style into a body of water.” The Flugtag craze started in Austria in 1991 (who knew lederhosen was so inspirational), but it has hit the US of A in the past few years, picked up sponsorship by high-caf drink Red Bull, and the results are spectacular. The next Flugtag meet will take place this Saturday in Miami. The Flugtag distance record is 195 feet, but the truth is no one really cares about actually flying. What they care about is creativity. Like the team in San Francisco that built a giant piece of toast out of Styrofoam and propelled it (and themselves) into the Bay from a giant toaster. That’s Flugtag at it’s best, and further proof that it’s a Wetass World. It’s impossible to convey the real flavor without video, so TWC presents two short clips: “Building Stupid Cow” (click here for Windows Media, and here for Quicktime); and “Flugtag Highlights” (click here for Windows Media and here for Quicktime)….

What The Hell Is Going On Here? Who Knows. It’s Flugtag!
