How about a shark-revenge fantasy, courtesy of The Drones? Raw, angry, and mournful, with a touch of Lou Reed.
Perfect for a Friday sign-off. So crank it to 11.
Well you are all my brothers, and you have been kind But what were you expecting to find? Now your eyes turn inwards, countenance turns blank And I’m floating away on a barrel of pain It looks like nothing but the sea and sky remain
I sing na na nana nananana na Na na nana nananana na
A harpoon’s shaft is short and wide A grappling hook’s is cracked and dry I said, why don’t you get down in the sea Turn the water red like you want to be?
Cause if I cry another tear I’ll be turned to dust No the sharks won’t get me they don’t feel loss Just keep one eye on the horizon man, you best not blink They’re coming fin by fin until the whole boat sinks
“I was standing by the shore, pulled by the deepest blue.”
This week’s selection comes from Amy Mayers, who says:
I need to be near water. When I need a short break and some healing, I turn on “Hipsters” by Deacon Blue. It never fails to give me an internal “ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” (exhale and relaxing 🙂 ). It also reminds me to keep daring!
(Who’s going to hook us all up for next week? Send me your Earthist Music selection at timzimmdc@gmail.com)
Have a great weekend.
The Hipsters
All, all those waves
And that old sun
Shining
So drive
Drive to the coast
And let the water
Surround you
I was standing by the shore
Pulled by the deepest blue
Aching for the allure
Of the hipster boys
And the hipster girls
Shining
Friends, who needs friends?
When there’s a road
And an ocean
I was standing by the shore
Pulled by the deepest blue
Aching for the allure
Of the hipster boys
And the hipster girls
Shining
When I let the dream
Die slowly down
Did I do it right
Or was I wrong?
I was standing by the shore
Pulled by the deepest blue
Aching for the allure
Of the hipster boys
And the hipster girls
Shining, falling
Glistening, diving…..
This edition of Earthist Music, to kick off the weekend, comes from Phil Demers, who listens to Lateralus, by Tool, when he is feeling the weight of his journey. “It reminds me to keep going,” he says.
What music inspires you to do the right thing? To care? To fight for new values? Send it in (timzimmdc@gmail.com), with a brief note about why you chose it, and I’ll feature it on a Friday.
In the meantime, go full screen and crank up the volume.
Lateralus
black then white are all i see in my infancy
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me
lets me see
as below, so above and beyond, i imagine
drawn beyond the lines of reason
push the envelope
watch it bend
over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind
withering my intuition, missing opportunities
and i must feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines
black then white are all i see in my infancy
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me
lets me see
there is so much more and beckons me to look thru to these infinite possibilities
as below, so above and beyond, i imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason
push the envelope
watch it bend
over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind
withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind
feed my will to feel this moment, urging me to cross the line
reaching out to embrace the random
reaching out to embrace whatever may come
i embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected
enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired
to fathom the power
to witness the beauty
to bathe in the fountain
to swing on the spiral
to swing on a spiral
to…
swing on a spiral of our divinity and still be a human
with my feet upon the ground i move myself between the sounds and open wide to suck it in
i feel it move across my skin
i’m reaching up and reaching out
i’m reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me
whatever will be willed on me
and following our will and wind we may just go where no one’s been
we’ll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one’s been
spiral out… keep going
spiral out… keep going
spiral out… keep going
